No tricks or strings, just free food. Again, Thanks Tom!!! At each McDonald's, there will be some local veterans and/or boy scout to sign in the veterans for their free meal. | As of September 30, 2007 there are still 1769 Americans unaccounted for from the Vietnam War, 562 Army, 373 Navy, 582 Air Force, 218 Marines, and 34 civilians. Of this 1769, 20 are from Arkansas, 24 are from Louisiana, 36 are from Oklahoma and 114 are from Texas. There are three Americans unaccounted from the ongoing war in Iraq and one from the 1st Iraqi war - Desert Storm. There is 120 Americans unaccounted for from the Cold War. There are over 8100 Americans unaccounted for from the Korean War, over 78,000 Americans unaccounted for from World War II and 3349 Americans unaccounted for from World War I.
20th ANNUAL POW/MIA VIGIL On Friday & Saturday, August 31 -September 1, VVA # 278 held our 20th Annual POW/MIA Vigil/14th Annual "Ride to Remember". Although the attendance could have been better (always) it was a complete success. We had more at the services, more in the "Ride", and great newspaper coverage. For the "Ride", we had great cooperation from the local police/sheriff/DPS with the escort. We even had a helicopter escort down State Line Avenue thanks to VVA 278 member Don Ruggles. Part of the goals of these vigils is to draw attention to this issue. With these escorts, we definitely drew attention and with the newspaper coverage, they knew what the "Ride" was. Thanks to all who participated in this event. And the balloon release went very well, also. At the first Candlelight service on Friday night we dedicated two bronze plaques which we added to the Memorial site. These plaques dedicate the two trees to two local POW/MIAs from the Vietnam War, one, Stephen Musselman from Texarkana, whose remains were returned and, James Clements from Atlanta, who returned alive but passed away several years ago. Stop by and see these plaques. The rest of the services went very well, we remembered some who have been with us at these vigils in the past but have passed on, and we met some new friends who are going to step up and take their places in remembering our POW/MIAs! Dr. Dan Bookout stopped by on Saturday night and described an ongoing recovery effort in which we will be assisting in if needed. Thanks to all who attended and who participated! WE WILL NEVER FORGET OUR POW/MIAs!!! Local World War II MIA Returned On Friday, September 28, 2007 nine members of VVA # 278 participated in the services of a local World War II MIA, 2nd Lt. Raymond Cooley. Raymond Cooley was 21 when his plane was forced down by a severe storm April 16, 1944 on a New Guinea mountainside. Raymond was raised in Leary, Texas, just outside Texarkana. Raymond's widow, daughter and other relatives, along with a boyhood friend attended the service, getting closure after 60 plus years. Cooley's remains were found with the nine other crew members who were interred earlier this month at Arlington National Cemetary. The Arkansas Army National Guard, Air Force, Texarkana Arkansas Police Department, and the Patriot Guard took part in the service. Welcome Home Raymond Cooley! |
| TEXARKANA AREA VETERANS COUNCIL |
| The Texarkana Area Veterans Council (TAVC) meets on the fist Thursday of each month, usually at the American Legion Post at 525 East Broad Street.
The TAVC recently purchased it's third DAV van to transport veterans to the VA Medical Center in Shreveport, LA. It is in service now. The old van has been placed in service helping local needy veterans get to the VA Outpatient Clinic here in Texarkana. Drivers are needed for both of these vans. You don't have to be a veteran to be a driver! For more information on how to volunteer for these driver positions contact an officer of TAVC or VVA # 278. We sincerely thank all of those who helped us in getting this van through the TAVC's annual Chilli Cook-off. The TAVC's 2008 Chili Cook-off is scheduled for Friday, February 15, 2008 at the Truman Arnold Center at Texarkana College. This is "Salute the Hosptialized Veterans" week. |
| 25th ANNIVERSARY OF THE VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL (THE WALL) |
| The Vietnam Veterans Memorial (the "WALL") will have it's 25th anniversary this year on November 10, 2007. VVA is presenting the 25th Anniversary Parade in celebration of the dedication of the "Wall". If you were there in 1982 then you know why you should be back for the 25th. If you weren't there in '82, then this is the one to attend, because it is being held by us, for us. For more information go to: www.vva.org. |

| MARINE CORPS LEAGUE, TEXARKANA DETACHMENT #1149 |
| At the last meeting of the Marine Corps League # 1149, a reorganization took place and some new officers were elected. They are going to eliminate the long drawn out meetings and make it quick and informative. Not saying that the Last officers were not doing a good job but things got a little drawn out. We thank them for their services and hope they stay with the League.
As of now the officers of MCL # 1149 are: Commandant: Roy Ford, Senior Vice Commandant: Ernest King, Junior Vice Commandat: Terry Ruth, Judge Advocate: Greg Beck, Adjutant/Paymaster: James Knox, Chaplain: Roy Ford. The League Detachment also voted to join the Texarkana Area Veterans Council. I apologoze for not remembering who else was chosen as delegates. I remember Ernest king was one of them. Sorry! |
| VVA ARKANSAS STATE COUNCIL |
| The VVA Arkansas State Council had a meeting on Saturday, September 29, 2007 in Pine Bluff. Fisher Plymale and Greg Beck of VVA # 278 attended. As usual it was an interesting and infromative meeting.
Due to health conditions Gary Trice had to resign his position as President. Jim Bryant stepped up from Vice to President. They are going to wait till eelction time to fill the slot of Vice. Arkansas' State Council meetings are not as busy as Texas but there are only five chapters in Arkansas. But they are all very active and are taking care of veterans. And there are definetly some fantastic people in Arkansas, I always enjoy attending their meetings. The next one will be in February 2008. |
| VVA # 278 FUNDRAISING |
| We have finally given away the shotgun and muzzeloader! Stacy Johnston won the shotgun and Maria Salazar won the muzzleloader. I think we done rather well on this one, we didn't set any records, but we done rather well.
We know have a "Patriotic Ensemble" we are going to draw on. This contains a U.S. Flag kit, a POW/MIA throw, a "Wall" t-shirt, a POW/MIA bracelet, a patriotic cd and a patriotic cassette tape. the drawing will be held at our November 11 meeting. Dig deep! |
